Selected Articles

There are way too many articles on Autism to include and this FAQ will do more than scratch the surface, listing a few of the most influential articles. A 1985 book (Classic Readings in Autism edited by Anne Donnellan, see below under "Books") is a selection of many of the most important articles to that date.

H. Asperger.
"Autistic psychopathy in childhood", Translated by Uta Frith. Included in Uta Frith's Autism and Asperger's Syndrome (see below under "Books").
Baron-Cohen S; Allen J; Gillberg C.
"Can autism be detected at 18 months? The needle, the haystack, and the CHAT." British Journal of Psychiatry, 1992 Dec, 161:839-43. (UI: 93130306)
Sue Bettison
"The long-term effects of auditory training on children with autism", Journal of autism and developmental disorders (1996) 26:no 3. 361-374.
Douglas Biklen.
"Communication Unbound: Autism and Praxis", Harvard Educational Review (1990): v60n3, 291-314. This article describes Biklen's research on facilitated communication at the Deal Communication Centre in Melbourne, Australia. Biklen observed 21 people classified as autistic using facilitated communication. The article includes a description of the methodology, a literature review on autism and communication with a special focus on how facilitated communication fits in the context of this literature, and a careful description of students' communication through facilitation.
Edward Fenske et al.
"Age at Intervention and Treatment Outcome for Autistic Children in a Comprehensive Intervention Program", Analysis and Intervention in Developmental Disabilities (1985) 5:49-58.
Stanley Greenspan, and Serena Wieder.

"Improved social and language skills after secretin administration in patients with autistic spectrum disorders", Journal of the Association for Academic Minority Physicians (1998) 9(1):9-15.
Leo Kanner.
"Autistic Disturbances of Affective Contact", Nervous Child 2 (1943): 217-250. Reprinted in Childhood Psychosis: Initial Studies and New Insights, ed. Leo Kanner (Washington, D.C.: V. H. Winston, 1973). Also reprinted in Classic Readings in Autism, ed. Anne M. Donnellan (New York: Teacher's College Press, 1985). The original paper describing what we now call autism. Describes a number of children that Leo Kanner had seen in the course of his practice, among whom he detected a pattern. It still serves as a very reasonable and instructive overview of the symptoms.
J.J. McEachin, T. Smith, and Ole Ivar Lovaas.
"Long-term outcomes for children with autism who received early intensive behavioral treatment", American Journal on Mental Retardation (1993) 97:359-372.
Ole Ivar Lovaas.

Bernard Rimland & Steve Edelson.
Article on AIT published in the "Second Opinion" section of the May 1994 American Journal of Speech-Language Pathologists. This study employed more than 300 subjects, used the EERS, the Audiokinetron and the ATET as AIT devices. In this study the authors concluded (among other findings) that the filtering of specific frequencies was superfluous to the effect of the AIT procedure (i.e.not a nec. component). The authors did not use a control group for this study and instead relied on the control data from the pilot study which included a very small sample.
Bernard Rimland & Steve Edelson.
"Auditory integration training in autism: A pilot study", Journal of autism and developmental dosorders (1995) Vol 25, 61-70.

Lorna Wing.
"The history of ideas on autism: legends, myths and reality," AUTISM: The International Journal of Research and Practice (1997) 1. Among other things, surveys the pre-Kanner/Asperger references to autism.

Bibliographies

(See Sobfey, Autism Bibliography and Kehrer, Internationale Autismus-Bibliographie under "Books").

I have seen numerous short lists of book recommendations put out by various Autism support organizations. I have assembled a short list, "Autism Book Recommendations" consisting of those books listed in this FAQ Memo that are most often cited by readers of the AUTISM mailing list. It and other online bibliographies and reading lists are available through the web page "Autism Resources" cited in the first section of this memo ("Mailing List, Archives, FAQ Memo, Web Page").

Another source of a lot of references is Anne Donnellan's Classic Readings in Autism. It does not have a bibliography per se, but between the articles reprinted and their references, a lot of material is listed.

Some bibliographies:

Barbara Baskin.
Beat of a Different Drummer [or possibly Sound of a Different Drummer]. Annotated bibliography of books on various disabilities.
Tristram Smith.
"Autism" in Handbook of Effective Psychotherapy, T.R. Giles, ed., (New York: Plenum Press, 1993) 107-133. Describes many approaches to autism as well as reviews the literature for validation. Leans strongly to behavioral methods.
Harry W. Wright et al.
"Autism: A Selected 1990-1992 Bibliography", Perceptual and Motor Skills (1993) vol. 77, pp. 1363-1385.

Mindblindness: An Essay on Autism and Theory of Mind (Cambridge, Massachusetts: MIT Press, 1995). Part of the series Learning, Development, and Conceptual Change. In Mindblindness, Simon Baron-Cohen presents a model of the evolution and development of "mindreading." [As far as I can tell from reviews, he is not referring to extra-sensory powers, but uses the term "mindreading" to mean the unconscious deductions & educated guesses we make about other peoples' minds -ed] He argues that we mindread all the time, effortlessly, automatically, and mostly unconsciously. It is the natural way in which we interpret, predict, and participate in social behavior and communication. We ascribe mental states to people: states such as thoughts, desires, knowledge, and intentions. Building on many years of research, Baron-Cohen concludes that children with autism, suffer from "mindblindness" as a result of a selective impairment in mindreading. For these children, the world is essentially devoid of mental things. Note: Newsweek 1995/8/14 has an article featuring this book.
